To many, the comments in this article are going to read like a flashback scene from the movie “V for Vendetta”. This level of legal wrangling surrounding encrypted texting and encrypted communications in general does more harm than good. It is equivalent to the situation surrounding gun restrictions. Law abiding individuals will adhere to the restrictions while criminals will ignore them. I do believe a level of heightened surveillance is necessary, but to this extent and not in this manner. I challenge law enforcement to be more creative and consider the behavior of the criminal and not that of the law abiding citizen.
